Getting an account
The first account on a server is always the admin, and it is created through the sign-in page.
First account
Section titled “First account”On an empty server, the sign-in page at /login shows Set up your account instead of a sign-in form. Fill in:
- Name — your display name.
- Email — used for sign-in.
- Password — at least 8 characters.
- Load demo data (optional) — seeds demo bank accounts, about 3 months of transactions, budgets, and rules, so the app is not empty on first open.
Then press Create account. The account you create here is the administrator — there is no way to create a non-admin first account, and this one can manage users.
After setup: adding users
Section titled “After setup: adding users”Once an account exists, public signup is closed. The setup form no longer appears, and a hand-crafted request to it is rejected with:
This server has already been set up. Ask an administrator to create your account.
Admins create additional accounts in Settings → Users:
- Create an account — name, email, password (minimum 8 characters), plus optional Make admin and Load demo data checkboxes.
- Accounts list — for each account: Make admin / Remove admin, Reset password, and Delete. Delete asks you to type the account’s name to confirm; deleting an account removes all of its data.
Signing in
Section titled “Signing in”Sign in with your email and password. If two-factor authentication is enabled, a second step asks for a 6-digit code from your authenticator app or a backup code. You can enable TOTP in Settings → Security → Two-factor authentication (API bearer tokens bypass TOTP; the browser still asks for the code).
Where to go next
Section titled “Where to go next”- Quick start — running the server itself.
- Docker & Compose and From source — how to get a running instance.
- API tokens — for scripts and MCP clients instead of a browser session.
